Wayne Henning: Stadium's future rests in hands of city, residents

We encourage members of the community to attend in order for us to hear your opinions on all of the data provided.

Because it is important that residents have access to and understand all the information presented by Gateway, I also strongly encourage residents to attend the advisory board meetings in January and February. These are working meetings, so we will not be soliciting comments. However, it will be valuable to hear all the information in order to reach an informed opinion about the future of Roberts Stadium.

Wayne Henning is chairman of Roberts Stadium Advisory Board.

World's most recession-proof economy? The Super Bowl

VIP tickets to the "Super Village" in Scottsdale, where events such as a celebrity flag-football game featuring Pamela Anderson and Matt Leinart will be staged, are going for $500.

The Super Village alone has 10 corporate sponsors aiming to connect with well-healed consumers. Pontiac will present a 50 Cent concert, while showing off its 2008 model. Samsung is prominently displaying its latest HDTVs.

Some of the NFL's biggest sponsors have had their bells rung lately. Motorola last week reported horrible year-end results for 2007, with revenues falling 15 percent because of its sagging cell-phone business. Sprint Nextel lost 109,000 wireless subscribers in the fourth quarter of 2007 and recently announced it was laying off 7 percent of its workforce and closing 8 percent of its company-owned retail stores.

Dream ride to Cape, but a nightmare driving home

For thousands of visitors, going to Cape Cod over Memorial Day weekend was much easier and more pleasant than heading home. The new $60 million flyover, which erased the hated rotary at the base of the Sagamore Bridge, smoothed Cape-bound travel on Friday and Saturday. But drivers returning from the Cape Monday found themselves in a worse-than-usual traffic nightmare, with backups that stretched as far as 17 miles to Yarmouth at midafternoon.

To avoid a repeat this summer, state transportation officials said yesterday they plan to install electronic signs urging vacationers to stagger their departure from the Cape as well as their arrival. Officials said they will also look at possible changes to the roadways around Exit 1, where Route 6A merges into Route 6 at the base of the bridge.

Surveyor says savings in gas, car use benefit public

CROWN POINT |The Lake County surveyor said he is reducing his spending and making amends for lapses in judgment that have made him the target of public outrage in recent weeks.Surveyor George Van Til said Wednesday he repaid the county for use of county gasoline and a pickup truck, forfeited mileage reimbursements he won't claim and has given up a take-home vehicle he once enjoyed at taxpayer's expense. He said he also is planning to reduce his office's fleet by three vehicles for a total savings he calculates to be $11,925.Van Til also has drawn up a proposed county ordinance that would more closely regulate county vehicle and gasoline use."When an official creates a problem, they should try to make it right. This is about trying to make things right. I'm taking lemons and making lemonade," Van Til said.Van Til came under attack in November for lending a new county-owned pickup truck to his son to drive to high school. He gave up his lease car to calm public opinion, but was back in the public eye in December when one of his employees was caught on a security video pumping gasoline from a county pump into Van Til's personal sport utility vehicle.Van Til said lending the truck to his son was a mistake.

Government can't be trusted on Afghanistan, lawyers argue

Harper Conservatives, Open, Accountable, transparent, Like a mud puddle and just as deep.
Oh How ethical, I wonder how all this fits in their values.
At base of ethics is respect and this government has shown no respect for us Canadians and Canada. Posted 24/01/08 at 12:22 PM EST | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment .
